1.42 सङ्करः confusion of castes, नरकाय for the hell, एव also, कुलघ्नानाम् of the slayers of the family,कुलस्य of the family, च and, पतन्ति fall, पितरः the forefathers, हि verily, एषां their, लुप्तपिण्डोदकक्रियाः deprived of the offerings of rice-ball and water.No Commentary.

व्याख्या -- सङ्करो नरकायैव कुलघ्नानां कुलस्य च -- वर्ण-मिश्रणसे पैदा हुए वर्णसंकर-(सन्तान-) में धार्मिक बुद्धि नहीं होती। वह मर्यादाओंका पालन नहीं करता; क्योंकि वह खुद बिना मर्यादासे पैदा हुआ है। इसलिये उसके खुदके कुलधर्म न होनेसे वह उनका पालन नहीं करता, प्रत्युत कुलधर्म अर्थात् कुलमर्यादासे विरुद्ध आचरण करता है।जिन्होंने युद्धमें अपने कुलका संहार कर दिया है, उनको ' कुलघाती ' कहते हैं। वर्णसंकर ऐसे कुलघातियोंको नरकोंमें ले जाता है। केवल कुलघातियोंको ही नहीं, प्रत्युत कुल-परम्परा नष्ट होनेसे सम्पूर्ण कुलको भी वह नरकोंमें ले जाता है।पतन्ति पितरो ह्येषां लुप्तपिण्डोदकक्रियाः -- जिन्होंने अपने कुलका नाश कर दिया है, ऐसे इन कुलघातियोंके पितरोंको वर्णसंकरके द्वारा पिण्ड और पानी (श्राद्ध और तर्पण) न मिलनेसे उन पितरोंका पतन हो जाता है। कारण कि जब पितरोंको पिण्ड-पानी मिलता रहता है, तब वे उस पुण्यके प्रभावसे ऊँचे लोकोंमें रहते हैं। परन्तु जब उनको पिण्ड-पानी मिलना बन्द हो जाता है, तब उनका वहाँसे पतन हो जाता है अर्थात् उनकी स्थिति उन लोकोंमें नहीं रहती।पितरोंको पिण्ड-पानी न मिलनेमें कारण यह है कि वर्णसंकरकी पूर्वजोंके प्रति आदर-बुद्धि नहीं होती। इस कारण उनमें पितरोंके लिये श्राद्ध-तर्पण करनेकी भावना ही नहीं होती। अगर लोक-लिहाजमें आकर वे श्राद्ध-तर्पण करते भी हैं, तो भी शास्त्रविधिके अनुसार उनका श्राद्ध-तर्पणमें अधिकार न होनेसे वह पिण्ड-पानी पितरोंको मिलता ही नहीं। इस तरह जब पितरोंको आदरबुद्धिसे और शास्त्रविधिके अनुसार पिण्ड-जल नहीं मिलता, तब उनका अपने स्थानसे पतन हो जाता है ।।1.42।।

अर्जुन उवाच -- संजय उवाच -- स तु पार्थो महामनाः परमकारुणिको दीर्घबन्धुः परमधार्मिकः सभ्रातृको भवद्भिः अतिघोरैः मारणैः जतुगृहादिभिः असकृद् वञ्चितः अपि परमपुरुषसहायः अपि हनिष्यमाणान् भवदीयान् विलोक्य बन्धुस्नेहेन परमया च कृपया धर्माधर्मभयेन च अतिमात्रस्विन्नसर्वगात्रः सर्वथा अहं न योत्स्यामि इति उक्त्वा बन्धुविश्लेषजनितशोकसंविग्नमानसः सशरं चापं विसृज्य रथोपस्थे उपाविशत् ।।1.42।।

1.26 - 1.47 Arjuna said --- Sanjaya said -- Sanjaya continued: The high-minded Arjuna, extremely kind, deeply friendly, and supremely righteous, having brothers like himself, though repeatedly deceived by the treacherous attempts of your people like burning in the lac-house etc., and therefore fit to be killed by him with the help of the Supreme Person, nevertheless said, 'I will not fight.'He felt weak, overcome as he was by his love and extreme compassion for his relatives. He was also filled with fear, not knowing what was righteous and what unrighteous. His mind was tortured by grief, because of the thought of future separation from his relations. So he threw away his bow and arrow and sat on the chariot as if to fast to death.
